The Cattle Car: Stepping In and Out of Darkness, Roundhouse Park, TORONTO – On Sunday, October 18, 2020

The Cattle Car: Stepping In and Out of Darkness, Roundhouse Park, TORONTO – On Sunday, October 18, 2020

Over the course of a year, I had the opportunity to work with the team from Shadowlight, helping with the visual effects prep of the green screen footage for their 360 degree, immersive installation.

Shadowlight: The Cattle Car Experience is an interactive, immersive multimedia experience inside of an exact replica of a World War II cattle car. Once used to transport Jews and other targeted groups to their deaths in concentration and extermination camps, this car has now been transformed into an engaging multimedia exhibit that combats intolerance and racism in a unique new way. From inside the car, audiences experience 360 degrees of video projections that recreate and retell the true story of two Holocausts survivors' experiences inside such a car.

It has been the most powerful and important project I've had the honor to be part of in 2020. For more information, check out the Shadowlight website.

Using the alpha channel created, I reveal the original video. Basically, it’s like using a silhouette to only show the character and remove the greenscreen.

I keyed over 39 green screen video plate that averaged 5 minutes length per shot. Artifacts from the floor were fade out in the final video composition projected in the walls of the car.

Staying organize is key when dealing with a huge amount of shots to chroma key. A comprehensive file naming and folder structure are necessary to collaborate smoothly.
